How safe are condoms?

I'm sorry for asking this silly question and I know I should know better but I don't 🙈 My boyfriend claims the ONLY reason a condom isn't 100% "safe" is because it can break and therefore the sperm can leak out, but if it doesn't break it's 100% safe and impossible to get pregnant. I always thought that even if it was intact it's not 100% safe. I can't explain why so I might be wrong but I don't know? Educate me please!

He’s right. Sperm can’t swim through a condom so as long as its on properly and there’s no holes and it doesn’t break you can’t get pregnant.

Condoms are only 98% effective even when used perfectly, so that means even if a condom doesn’t break, there’s still a 2% chance of pregnancy. Only abstinence is 100%

They are extremely effective if used properly. But there can be problems if they are stored improperly, applied improperly, use the wrong kind of lubricant, wrong size, removed improperly etc. 
So if you don't want to get pregnant do some research.

They do break though or have holes, we never used to use them because we didn’t care if we got pregnant after our second child we started using them because we were done having kids and it broke and 9 months later now we have Ayden lol Our newborn is only a month old so now we are deciding on a different type of birth control probably an IUD
