getting your cervix checked during labor

Hey ladies, I'm posting this anonymously because I feel a bit embarrassed that I don't know this yet. I'm 20 years old and expecting my first child.... I've heard that when you get your cervix checked during labor it is painful.... what exactly do they do to check how far dilated you are that makes it painful? UPDATE...
