Your opinion about former NAACP leader Rachel Dolezal pretending to be blank?

For years she portrayed herself as a black women. Then her parents revealed that the civil rights activist is actually white. That she identifys herself as black?

So, as a black woman I am not offended that she pretended to be black. However I do feel like she could have done everything she did as a white woman. If she feels black on the inside, who are we to tell her that she can't identify as black. It's not like she was being racist and making a mockery of black lives, she seems to really care about the black experience in America. I also think that she shouldn't have lied about her experiences, but I would love for her to write a book about what her life was like living as a black person for 10 years and what that means about racial identity and race relations in America. I know it's really weird, but I am really curious as to why she did what she did. Like I said, I'm not offended but she shouldn't  have lied.

Race is not a real thing, it's a social construct that we decide has or does not have value.  So what does it mean for someone to be black? Just something to think about.

I feel like if a man can choose to identify as a woman and a woman can choose to identify as a man why can't they choose race? Im white and grew up with a black guy who swore he was white. He identifies as white and hates to be called African American.

I'm just reading this and think it's very odd but I feel there will be a lot of people out there saying they identify being black a different gender I don't care as long as people are happy it will be a happy world there's no more room for hate.

I'm not black, so I'm not sure how much weight my opinion should carry. However, I have read some pieces from other prominent black folks praising her for her efforts in fighting race related inequities. If they're ok with it, why should I have an issue?

I haven't read much on this, but are their black people who are also seriously offended? I did read something about it being offensive that she claimed some scholarships that were intended for African-Americans. Anyways, my opinion on this is still is still open on this, so feel free to educate me.

I do think her family is a hot mess, though. It seems like they "outed" her to deflect attention from her brother's assault charges, right?
