Is it wrong to change the name of an adopted child?

Question

If you adopted a 1 year old child out of the foster care system, would you consider changing their name?
Not just the last name, but the first name as well.

I was a foster kid. And no one changed my name [to my knowledge.] but I also know hate my first name because I associate it with my birth mother.
But I don’t think I would’ve been okay with someone else changing my name, now that it’s my choice I’m okay with it.
As someone else said, we’re not adoptable animals.

If they are coming from foster care, they have a higher chance of having an American sounding name. So I wouldn’t change it. If I adopted from a different country, I don’t know what I would do. A couple at our church kept the baby’s name the same but gave him a nickname. I think that was nice because he gets to keep his Ethiopian name, but he doesn’t have to get ostracized for having a different sounding name. Then the baby can change it when they get older if they want.

My friend did this. She made her daughter’s first name her middle name and gave her a new first name. She did adopt her from just a couple of months old, though, so it was not a difficult transition for the child.

I know 2 children adopted from foster care and the parents changed their names .... these kids are in elementary school 2nd and 3rd grade ..... I think if you wanna do it go for it butttttttt at a certain age ya just gotta go with the flow

I'm adopted. My parents kept my name the same. I love my name. I don't know if I would feel bad if they had changed it. I do think it is better that they kept it the same. I even feel bad when people change pets names though.

if they're like 2 or younger I would say its okay.

No some do it for protection so the birth parents can’t find the child

I would keep their first name and just give them the one u want as a nickname

I don't think it's wrong, but at 1 a child will likely know their name so I'd try to pick a name similar to theirs or a name with the same nickname. Picking a totally different name will just be confusing for everyone.
