Self Uniting Marriage...do you agree ?

I saw this on the show four weddings and it's legal in four states in the U.S.A. It works like this the couple says vows and pronounces themselves married, they are the officiant and then can get a self uniting marriage license. What do you think ?

I think it's good to have witnesses signing the paper, or have some kind of official process that both people have to be present for. i think it's useful just in case there is a dispute or to help prevent forced marriages.
but as far as the need for a priest or something, I definitely don't think that's necessary.

I don't see how it's much different than any other marriage, you would still have to file it somewhere I'm guessing? That's true of all weddings in my state so this would be no different really.

Regardless, I dont care how a couple decides to get married. As long as it is between consenting adults, they could include a donkey in their ceremony playing a saxophone for all I care lol.

Hell to the yes. I wish we would have done that. We had our mutual best friend marry us. Like best damn friend. 3 months later he confessed his love for me and attempted to make a move on me. I shut that shit down real quick. I feel like our wedding is almost dirty now. We plan to renew out vows in a few years. Something beautiful and include our little girls in it 💕

I feel like this could be a problem.. having witnesses to vows allows for a person to back out if they are being pushed into a bad situation. I feel like a person in an abusive situation could end up married this way and their spouse would be in a greater position to take advantage of them.
The process of getting a marriage license here does require each person to raise their right hand and agree they are obtaining the license of their own free will (not sure of it is the same everywhere?).. but there is usually a wait period before the license can be used and validated by a judge or clergy person.

Ehh seems kind of sketching to me, like couples could find loopholes to abuse spousal privilege, benefits, or taxes. I’m not saying people have to have weddings or anything extravagant - my husband and I paid $20 and had a friend be the officiant. Since marriage is a legally binding contract, I think it needs witnesses and a ‘legit’ officiant.

I mean, as long as they have all their proper documentation and papers filled out, I guess it doesn't matter. I think officiants overcharge for their services anyway.
