Husband has HPV? TMI

Question

He thinks he got it from the person he dated before me (I totally trust him). The urgent care said it was not the cancer causing kind, but just the wart causing kind. Urgent care said that it's no big deal and they could just be frozen off. Lots of times the virus lies dormant for years until stress or other things can make it flare up.

The urgent care he went to said it wouldn't be harmful to him, myself or the baby. But have any of you had experience with this? My doctor has yet to call me back. Just been a little worried...

It's a good thing you trust him!! A lot of women make assumptions!! It is usually unknown for many years!!

I have HPV and I had warts frozen off. It's not harmful. I got it from my ex which I was with 8 years ago and haven't had a flare up since.

The only way that the urgent care could know if it was high or low risk (it's likelihood of causing cancer) HPV would be to do a very expensive genotype test... I don't think they did that. Unfortunately most healthcare providers don't know much about men and HPV. Some kinds of HPV can cause cancers in men. It is very rare to spread HPV to a baby during delivery and a child is not at risk at any other time. Have you been tested? A Pap smear is different than an HPV test. A Pap smear is only looking to see if the cells look normal. A HPV test looks for the presence of the virus. I would recommend getting the HPV shots for you and your husband, while the vaccination is mostly suggested for children and people who haven't had sex yet, it protects against the highest risk HPV. there are over 100 types of HPV, and while your husband has one type he and you can still be protected from getting the cancer causing types. I would get your child vaccinated when they are 9 or 11 too. HPV Is the most common STD almost everyone will be exposed to it in their life time at the current morbidity. Check out CDC.gov and look at their info on HPV. I work in public health and specialize in incidence and prevention of HPV in males.

The only thing to worry about is you might get warts too. But it won't affect your baby.
