Is an hour and 40 minutes too far to drive for labor and delivery?

I want to do a waterbirth , however the closest place to me that does and takes my insurance is an hour and 40 minutes away. Would this be too far to drive if I go into labor ? First time mommy sorry !

I’ve also heard of families who a week before the due date rent a hotel close to the hospital/delivery place just in case.

My daughter is an hour and 30 from her hospital. She's due in 2/3 weeks and her Dr has been very thorough with her but also says at any signs of labor not to wait and go in, and they'll be no judgment if it's false. She, her husband, the Dr and the hospital feel confident it's not too far especially with how well they are being educated and keeping consistent appointments. I think K you'll be fine too, just keep asking questions and let them teach you. Congratulations!

YES!! from very first contraction until I was holding my first baby was less then 2.5h

I know my 30 minute drive seemed like FOREVER when I was in labor. I would keep that in mind. I also didn’t have a choice where I delivered.

Since you’re a first time mom your labor may be longer so if you head there as soon as your contractions are 5 to 10 minutes apart you will be fine. Do you know anyone who lives near by? If so maybe you can go a week out from your due date like someone else suggested or get s hotel room.

if you start heading there at the beginning you should be good instead of laboring at home a while like most people do

my friend had to be induced because her nearest hospital was more than 3 hours away.  (she's a teacher in vietnam). so, they scheduled a date to be safe. I think she's done that with all 3 actually. she's had them all there.

I know a lot of people in my hometown go to abitth center that is an hour away and they just head in and hang out at a hotel when the beginning stages of labor begin. just please be prepared to use that facility for ANY pregnancy needs. i.e. just because it's 3 am doesn't mean you can go to the closest hospital to get checked out for something non-emergent. they will be the hospital that has your records and they will be the hospital that needs to see you for anything that is non-emergent. also, in case you can't make it. I would ask for a copy of your prenatal records to have on hand so that you can bring those to the hospital that you have to go to.

I'm traveling an hour and a half to my birth center. I think it will be fine as long as I go in right when I start feeling labor instead of waiting at home for hours. I'm sure when you call your doctor or midwife they'll assess how your feeling and help your decided to head in our not.
