Is a period that's just off and on bleeding normal

My first month on the pill and all I've been having for my period during my placebo week is on and off bleeding and spotting. Not breakthrough bleeding because it's during my placebos so it's my "period" or withdrawal bleeding. But is it normal to have it off and on and spotting like this? My periods when I wasn't on the pill were just normal and continuous bleeding. It's actually really annoying because I'll take a pad off thinking I'm done then I'll start bleeding a few hours later...
