How do you deal with racism?

I'm mixed. My mother is African American and Irish and my father is just irish. Lately my SO mother has been making many racial slurs about not just me but my family! And when my SO tells her it's wrong, she says that HE needs to apologize to her. So, how do you guys deal with racism?

Put them in their place. Talk to her yourself, do not let her get away with this. It's NOT ok, regardless of what she says, let her know that her words are offensive.

I’m sure that’s exhausting and taxing on him, but he needs to keep confronting her and making it clear that he’s not just going to get tired of it and let her win and say those things about you or anyone else for that matter. I don’t know if this is the best advice but also maybe spending more time with her and trying to build a relationship could help, so she sees you more as who you are than just the color of your skin.

In that case since you’re going to deal with them for a lifetime, you need to put your foot down and get firm even if it comes across as “mean”. Tell her you will not tolerate her disrespecting you, your family, or future children you guys will have in the future with her racial remarks. If she keeps on then you’ll just have to avoid her the best you can, and when family events come up she won’t be welcome until she fixed her attitude.

I luckily don't have to deal too much with it hut my poor husband does. He told me he went on a huge rant at work the other day, as some lady of the same race of his told him he's become 'crazy' by marrying a white woman. Don't know all what was said but it sounds like he went on a bit. He basically told her that she has no idea what she's talking about and she needs to stop being so ignorant.
