Purpose of a promise ring?

Can someone explain to me what the meaning of a promise ring is to them? 
We all have different reasons, tell me yours.

I associate a promise ring with teenagers that haven’t reached adulthood yet— for those that want to express the desire to marry down the line or show the seriousness of a relationship, but aren’t ready to propose with an engagement ring.

to me, it kinda symbolizes promising to be committed to that person forever but not being old enough or financially ready to get married. I’ve seen multiple people in their 20s have promise rings, not just teenagers

it’s like an unofficial engagement
it’s a symbol that the couple has made a commitment to each other but he hasn’t officially proposed yet
to me they are pretty useless and they only symbolize that the couple is unofficially engaged.
I have been unofficially engaged to my ex before (without the ring) and that relationship didn’t last, but to me an unofficial engagement is an understanding between a couple that they aim to get married someday. which is pretty common if you’re the type of person who is looking for a life partner. But these relationships can end as well.

Honestly like a high school engagement ring, where they change their FB status to married or engaged. Rather they work out or not. Not bashing the adult promise rings but I mostly hear about it from teenagers.

I got one from my high school boyfriend then I married him 7 years later :) still married to him!!!  I saw it as a commitment to him, sorta how women would wear their boyfriends class ring 💕

I got mine when I was 16 from my SO but we never plan on getting married, we just dont feel like its necessary to get married. So to me it just shows that we are comitted to eachother. But generally Its a pre-engagement for teenagers/young adults.

My bf got me a promise ring after being together for 7 months. He said it was a promise to always love me even when I'm hard to handle to always be faithful and promise for me to always being able to count on him. We were 23&24 when he gave me mine. We weren't ready to be engaged. We've now been together almost 3 years and we've talked about getting engaged in the next couple years.
