dark skin ‘down there’

So it’s been like this for what feels like forever.. I overly scrub it in the shower, use exfoliant and have even tried to ‘wax’ the superficial layers off, but it hasn’t done anything. I’m married for 5 years I don’t think SO has ever even noticed it...it just bothers me.. am I alone? What causes it? Any know how to lighten it ?
