Ovulation predictor sticks aren’t a reliable way to prevent pregnancy unless you’re using them along with other methods for natural family planning. They only alert you to risk of pregnancy about 24 hours before you ovulate. Sperm can live inside a woman’s body for five days. So by the time an ovulation stick will tell you you’re about to ovulate, if you’ve had sex within the past five days it’s already too late as you can easily become pregnant.
If you’re going to use them as part of natural family planning I would combine their usage with temping, cm tracking, and condom use for the first three to six months until you figure out exactly how your cycles play out and what days are safe. It takes about half a year of close tracking before natural family planning is reliable.
