Washing brand new baby clothes??

Question

I’ve been told by a few people to wash all of the clothing, bedding, blankets and anything that he would wear or come into contact with against his skin before he comes.. even if it is brand new? 
I’ve also been told by a couple of people that it’s not necessary. 
What are your opinions? 
We got a lot of clothes and blankets (a lot of them are hand sewn or crocheted) at our baby shower & I want to make sure it’s okay if I don’t wash them with baby laundry soap or if I have to! Thank you 🙂🙂

100% you must wash everything there are some really nasty chemicals (preservatives and pesticides) sprayed on fabric. It’s not much effort really

I don’t think that something hand made is 100% necessary to clean. Typically washing baby clothes is to wash off any germs (from people touching all over it in the store)  or chemical residue from where it was made because babies have very sensitive skin. If you can’t wash the item then I wouldn’t worry about it, especially with it being hand made.

Avid crocheted here. You can always ask what yarn the blankets and things are made out of. *Most* yarn, especially baby yarn, is acrylic now instead of natural fibers and is very washable. I donate hats and blankets to the NICU often and wash everything in Dreft on delicate before I send it. Then machine dry it on low.  Some things I’ve used a delicates bag for, but I’ve found it just make the yarn more fuzzy instead of “protecting” it.

Def wash everything. But you can use your normal laundry detergent. Just think about how many people have handled those items from when they were made til they got to you. About how maybe they fell in the floor or were stepped on. About the chemicals in a manufacturing plant.

We wash everything beforehand. Newborns have poor immune systems, and store bought clothes are not always the cleanest or most sanitary. Think of the number of people who don't wash their hands after using the toilet. Now imagine them thumbing through all the baby clothes.

I washed everything store bought. The homemade blankets and clothing were made with pre-washed fabrics - my MIL always washes it before working with it so I didn’t worry about washing those.

Yes, I wash everything before using it. Blankets, clothes, mittens, hats, sheets, towels, Boppy covers, etc.

You should.  Admittedly I don’t always wash new clothes I get for myself but you have to remember that clothes get thrown on dirty factory floors, are transported without care for hygiene and hang in stores where people sneeze on them and touch with dirty hands.  So, it’s worth it to wash all new baby clothes for their sensitive little skin :)

Honestly i never washed brand new things just the ones i took out from the bins. My kids were never really sick other than the odd runny nose during winter.

I wouldn’t wash the handmade stuff- wouldn’t want to risk ruining it. But any store bought stuff I wash first.
