Breastfeeding with nipple shield.

I’ve been breastfeeding my 1 week old without a nipple shield but she’s struggling to stay latched because I have a really inverted nipple on my left. They’ve been cracked and bleeding already but healed up. So I pulled out my nipple shield because now she’s acting like she doesn’t know how to latch at all and it doesn’t matter what I do I’ll get her on properly just to have her pop off and painfully just get the tip of my nipple. But what I’m wondering is how do you ladies breastfeed in public using a shield? I have a family get together tomorrow and I’m really stressing on how I’m going to feed her there. And she takes forever to eat. Any tips? I don’t want to pump and take bottles.
