Tackling Misconceptions - The rigidity of Islam
We recently discussed the common misconceptions in society regarding Islam, and we touched on how to tackle them. It got me thinking. The misconceptions are not only on the outside, looking in. They’re well and truly present among the ummah. I’m sure I’m not the only one who was overwhelmed with questions when I first accepted Islam. I know, though, that a lot of us feel ashamed to even question Islam. But how can we expect to correct misconceptions in society, if we carry them ourselves?
So I thought it would be a good idea to start small, by raising questions and topics on Glow, that will allow us to address some misconceptions. I decided to make the first post about tackling the misconceptions surrounding how rigid Islam is.
____
The mindset within some of us in the ummah of today can be judgmental. We are quick to point out others’ faults and correct them with what we believe is right. But Islam is not the robotic, weighty or burdensome religion that some of us might believe it to be. It can seem as though there is a lot of pressure on Muslims. As though we are all bound by strict laws and guidelines. We can often forget that there are only a few fard (obligatory) acts of worship. Beyond that, how little or how much we do is up to us, depending on our intentions and how far we wish to strive in the path of Allah Ta’ala.
We are all equal, within the bounds of Islam. But we have our own paths. In fact, by Allah Ta’ala’s will, we create our own paths. We choose our own end-goals to work towards, different things motivate us, our reasons for practicing are different, we gain closeness and experience Allah Ta’ala’s love differently.
So, if you will, share your story with Islam. Where does Islam fit into your life? What path, if any, have you chosen? What keeps you going? Why is it important? Who is Allah Ta’ala to you and what role does He play, on a personal level, in your life?
Let’s hear about the beauty and joy of Islam and see just how unique and personal our journeys are - both Muslim and non Muslim responses are welcome!
(Note: you don’t need to answer any or all of the questions. They’re just a guide to prompt some thinking into your own journey in and around Islam)
