HELP LEWIS (hedgehog)

I rescued Lewis from a family that thought they wanted an exotic animal, their kids were young and everyone had hamsters and guinea pigs... they hated the hedgehog (I named him Lewis, after the croquette game in Alice in Wonderland). I have had him for 2-3 years. I went to give him a bath and clean his cage, the right side of his mouth was swollen by his bottom gum. I gave him a bath and then wetted a q tip and have been cleaning out his mouth. Every other day. Wetting his food every day so it’s bit not hard. I’m just so afraid I have been a horrible hedgehog mom... I rescued him and I don’t want to think I failed him. I bathe him and wrap him up and let him sit with me. I just feel terrible.
