metformin- in need of advice

I was diagnosed with PCOS a few months ago after being on birth control for five years. while on birth control I never had a period. in October of 2013 I came off of the birth control in hopes if TTC. now 8 months later we are still TTC. after one month of taking fertaild this month I got my first period in 5 years but it was awful. and ended with me in the hospital. I had my period for 15 days and multiple episodes of unconsiousness due to hypoglycemia and low hemoglobin levels. those fifteen days were followed by 4 days of the worst stomach pains I have ever had in my life. today at the gynecologist for a post ER follow up the doctor asked me of I wanted to try metformin at a low dose. I am not diabetic, I am actually hypoglycemic and am at a normal weight, I am 5'5 and 121 lbs. i told the doctor I would come home and do some research and ask the endocrinologist for his opinion at my consult. I have heard that metformin can cause kidney failure but have also heard that the benefits outweigh the side effects. what do you think? please let me know?
