Need advice

So my friend asked me if I wanted to go to the movies I said yeah. So we went and he asked me if I had money for my ticket I’m like no if I knew that I would brought my money. I thought he was going pay so I said something to him. And he going be like well this wasn’t a date just us going out I’m like umm well you should said that. He made it like it was. So maybe I read into wrong and we both like each other but we not on the same page he doesn’t want a relationship and I do. But he wants to be kissing me and what not like we are together. Was he wrong for asking me if I was going pay for my own ticket? I just always thought guys supposed to pay for the lady specially if you asked them out.
