Kids Don't Understand Gayness

"You can't let kids see a gay couple. They won't understand."

I work in a first grade classroom. Today, we made Mother's Day gifts.

The teacher explained that there were limited supplies, so the kids needed to be careful, because they only got one shot at the project.

A little boy raised his hand. "Miss," he said, "but I have two moms. Can I make two?"

"How do you have two moms?" Asked the girl beside him. At this point, the whole class was listening intently.

He shrugged. "I just do."

The girl was confused. "Well... what about your dad?"

"Don't have one" the little boy said. "I have an extra mom instead of a dad."

That was the end of it. I watched as 23 6-7 year olds returned to their letters after hearing their friend had two mommies.

No more questions.

No confusion.

No judgement.

So don't you dare try to tell me kids won't understand if they see a gay couple. Instead of pushing prejudice onto them, explain it.

I promise, they will understand. Kids are way more accepting and understanding than adults are, and more than adults give them credit for.
