do we get choice of iv in hospital

Question

so the reason I'm asking is because  I want minimum interventions during labor and to pay less and also do not want drugs  my last two babies I got it because it was just like your here let's start iv and I thought it was the norm but do I need to get it?  it's just an expensive bag of saline and it makes it hard to walk around with an iv pole and also i get so cold when I have it?  I can drink water and ice chips to stay hydrated. would it be weird to tell them to let me just labor on own without offering stuff  and decline the iv?   has anyone done that?

I would get the saline lock just in case. If you have a hemorrhage, you don’t want them trying to quickly get IV access in an emergency situation.

As a labor and delivery nurse I would imagine nost hospitals will at least want you to have a saline lock. This is an IV placed but has no fluids running into it. This way if there is an emergency and you need and IV quickly it's there ready to go. Talk to your doctor though... some of our docs are ok with this and some are not.

I asked to keep thing as natural as possible(unless I requested it directly). They didn’t set up an IV, and let me labor without being on any machine. They came in every two hours to monitor my little man. Since his heart rate was good each time. I didn’t need to be hooked up to the machine at all. I ended up having my baby 100% natural with no interventions, no help, no IV. It was awesome! Going to try it again for #2!
I would just ask them to intervene minimally. Which means no IV unless absolutely necessary! Good luck!!!🍀

Yeah I had an all natural birth and they did make me get a saline lock in case they needed it. They ended up having to give me fluid because I lost so much blood but I think that’s about it.

Depending on the hospital and dr, they won’t let you eat or drink anything in case surgery (a C section) is needed. 
If it’s something you want, talk to your dr!

You have to have one if you test positive at the end of your pregnancy for a certain bacteria around your vagina, they administer antibiotics this way about 2 hours before birth. I was so sad when I tested positive during my first pregnancy and had to have it. Maybe this time I will be clear- fingers crossed. I know my midwife does not require it- even though birth will be in a hospital.

I did not even think about needing fluids if I loose too much blood thanks all  I will ask and see if I can get the saline port thing

My first 2 I did not have an IV or anything, my last my water broke at 32 weeks so they were stopping my labor and needed to give me antibiotics just in case they could stop my labor and get me two weeks further. It probably varies by dr and hospital, check with your dr.
