Is it common for grandparents to go by their middle names?

Er

I think it must be a generational thing, but my grandparents and great grandparents all went by their middle names.

For example, my great uncle is legally known as James Ernest Lloyd Newton, but everyone calls him Lloyd. And my great grandmother was Sarah Eldred, but everyone called her Eldred.

Do other families do this?

UPDATE: So it sounds like there's a few of you who have grandparents that do this. Do you think you would ever go by YOUR middle name?
