Instead of a wedding registry, a couple says they just want cash or checks. What do you give them?

Was talking to my friend about this and mentioned that I would want to tell everyone that they should just give us straight money instead of using a wedding registry. She said people will still get a gift instead even if we make it perfectly known we don't want any and prefer the cash/check.
I'm wondering if that's true? I just figure it'd be easier on everyone doing it my way but maybe that's just me.

i believe it is true because there will always be people who insist giving people just money is rude (ex: my mother lmao) or people who think giving cash as a gift is tacky or meaningless or something but most people will respect your wishes

I’m okay with giving cash if that’s what they’d prefer. Especially because they might be using it on their honeymoon if they live together and already own everything they want or need.

In my culture we don’t do a wedding registry at all usually people bring cash and usually try to give a min. Of what it would be to cover their plate at the wedding... usually one person 50 bucks couple 100 or whatever you can give if your low on funds.  I thankfully didn’t even have to say cash only I got one gift rest was cash. I am not sure why people wouldn’t respect your request.

My friends got married in Nepal and asked for cash because they couldn’t take everything on the plane. The few gifts they did get were beautiful and from VERY close family. But everyone knew they had to fly back to America.

both. give a small symbolic gift and give a sum of money that I can afford.
however  I'm financially stable and can afford both without worrying about money.
if I was right on money however,  I would give them only a small gift.  I cant just give them a 20 dollar bill in a greeting card.. that's tacky in my opinion. 
I rather take the 20 bucks I can afford to spend and buy something cute that they can use or look at and smile.
if they choose to be rude about it or be offended or obviously not pleased, then maybe they should have not invited me.
if I take time to RSVP to a wedding , months in advance,  buy a nice dress,  get ready for the event,  drive there, give them as much as I can and they think its insulting,  then it's on them. I've done my part.
