Could it be a false negative?

I track my cycle in two apps, on one it says I’m 9 days late, on here i was supposed to start Sunday 6th which is almost a week. I had a first response test in my closet for some months & i checked the expiration date & it’s valid until 2019. I think it came back negative, could it be faulty or was it maybe negative because i peed on it at night & not first thing in the morning? I have NO symptoms, besides feeling like my period is going to start.
