lack of speech from 22 month old... should i worry?

Question

my son as very limited speech but a great understanding. I'm waiting to hear from a health visitor as I've just moved areas, but would like to see how he compares to more than just my group of friends. 
he can make noises of your common animals and car noises. he has said apple and Nana(banana) a few times, ball, no, go, oh! when he does something he knows he shouldn't or if he sees something happening on TV...other than this nothing else. 
he has perfect understanding and will get a plate from the cupboard if I' ask when making his din we, he will get hibs shoes, jacket etc, he'll try put them on, he snores when you say it's bed time,
would you say he is behind and I should be worried, or do you think it is 'normal'

So I was worried about my little guy to awhile back. But I found this article that talks about how if a child is pointing at things, trying to communicate, and understands what they are are being told then they might just be a little slower in talking. But it shouldn’t be a concern. If they aren’t doing those things, then you should look into interventions and testing :)

I was in your shoes not too long ago. Now my son is talking but you have to be around him everyday to understand him. He says these words really clear Mama/mum, “oh no!”, uh-oh, and all done. He also has a great understanding. Our pediatrician said he’s just a late talker and no worries. I read to him every night, while in the car we listen to ABC and vowel songs, and I’m constantly talking to him about what I’m doing.

My 2nd son didn't say much of anything until closer to 3. The main thing you want to be cautious of is possible hearing issues. Once that's ruled out,  I just kinda let him grow at his own pace as long as I saw improvement every month. He's 4 now and is speaking at the same level as his peers. Speech therapy is another option but my son would get so upset when anyone tried to get him to talk so I decided to leave him be,  but many have success with speech thereapy.

My daughter is 22months and only saying a handful of words like “ball, car, mama, hat, bye”. Her understanding is excellent but it’s also a concern for me. I have googled which says it’s normal and kids develop at their own pace but I understand how you feel!

I think its normal but best to be brought up to pediatrician. they can help with early intervention if necessary, or at the very least assure you that hes on the right track. sounds totally normal to me from what you describe. was anything said at his previous appointment? ....im sure all is well. hang in there mama

So I'm a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. I work mainly with Autistic children, but I handle a lot of intake assessments for early intervention. My child isn't talking either and it has been such a struggle for me because I know how valuable early intervention is. My main concern is he was talking and then stopped when his sister was born and is so stubborn he refuses to work with anyone on it. 
Everytime I see the pediatrician we talk about it and he always asks me to take a step back and look at the situation as if I came out to elvaluate him. Every single time I tell him I would give him a tiny bit more time, its common for boys not to talk to a little later and to wait and see. I'm seeing all the signs of him talking he's just not there yet. So he reminds me to do the same. 😂 Such a struggle though, I see the clinician side but as a parent, I worry.
If you are worried you have a variety of options mostly depending on the state you live in. In CA, I was reminding by our regional center in my area to call my school district directly to have him evaluated for speech. He wouldn't need additional services and mosr additional services are now funded theiugh insurance. Your best resource should be your pediatrician though if you are concerned, he should be able to put you into contact with your local Agency who would come out and evaluate him. 👍

My son who’s also 22months was the same way. He was referred out to children’s hospital of philly for an ent (possible tubes) and audiology test. We just found out that he has a severe hearing impairment ( sensorineural hearing loss).  It helps explain a lot going on with him ie not following directions, not really talking but gesturing, could care less about books or tv/movies unless they are super bright and vivid. 
He is ahead on his motor skills and self care and really only behind in communication.

I have a July 16 baby and I work in early intervention (with mostly speech delays) 
Without knowing your little one. 
I would reccomend talking to your doctor and if he/she is concerned (most aren’t) they can refer you to your states local agency to evaluate them. 
You can also self refer if doctor isn’t concerned but you still are. 
Most kids just need a little push and they start really talking. I would be happy to answer any questions or point you in the right direction for a referral if that’s the route you choose! Good luck!

Bring it up to the pediatrician at his 2 year wellness visit. The doctor is the best person to tell you if it’s no big deal, or if a little speech therapy is warranted. My friend had similar concerns, started her son in speech therapy, and in just 2 months, he had a “word explosion” alleviating all of her fears.
