Also a native over here. It doesn't actually make your hair grow faster, the braids themselves, but it helps keep your hair in place, and from getting a lot of breaks which can cause it to grow slower.

Braids are a protective style, just like twist are. 
Think like this: If you have a lot of loose, little strings to try to tie a knot; good luck.
Once they are braided, they become the strong rope that you need to complete many jobs.
Because your hair is alive, the better you take care of it, the better it will be for you. 
Braids are said to help your hair grow because it requires hair and scalp stimulation when combing, brushing, oiling the scalp and then the act of braiding, itself. 
So, YES! Braids, when done the right way and taken care of to the best of your ability CAN make your hair grow LONGER and STRONGER!

No but as everyone else said, if you go to bed with braids it helps with not having breakage as you sleep and so if your hair is healthy it can continue to grow instead of breaking off

I believe that trims (cutting off dead ends) makes it grow quicker. I also believe that hair elastics and such create pressure points in your hair which causes it to be frail at those points.

I've never heard that before. I braid my hair when it's wet before I go to bed. I was told as a girl if you braid your hair for bed you have  less breaking. but never heard anything about growing.
