How did you pay for IVF?

My husband is self employed so It makes me very nervous to use cash (we don’t really have it right now anyway). I was thinking about borrowing from my 401k (there is no tax penalty for borrowing). Or maybe take out a regular loan?

I’m self employed too, and things are very tight in our household now, especially after paying for a lot of Fertility testing and a few iuis. Idk how we would be able to afford it either. I have considered my 401k which doesn’t even have enough in it to cover ivf. Or borrowing against the equity on our home. It would take us several years to save enough and we’re already 30. Why is this happening to us?!? 😔

I highly suggest looking abroad to Europe.  IVF costs are 1/3 of the price including hotels and flights.   I live in NYC and we did our IVF in Spain, an easy direct flight.  because of my age we knew we would need more than 1 round so doing it in the US wasn't an option for us.  Their success rates are the same as here their protocols are the same and so are the meds.

Look into Glows fertility program. Their quote for ivf in my area was around $13k. Everywhere else was above $20k.

We took a loan out on one of my vehicles. 18,500 for 5 years at 2.99% interest.

A regular loan with no interests for at least a year sounds pretty good. Also some clinics offer financing....

We saved up before even getting to IVF.  This is our second IvF and we knew chances were high we would need to do it for more kids.  We always save for emergencies.

We saved for a year and paid cash.  There are companies that do fertility loans but I’m not sure how high the interest rates are.  I would be careful borrowing from your 401k.  Make sure you know exactly what the terms are.  I know people who have gotten themselves in a bind doing that.

I would double check on the 401k tax. I’m almost certain you are penalized, even if it’s to pay medical bills.
