Check the social security website. They just released all the data from 2017, including by state. But even the number 2 most popular names are less than 1% of the population, so there’s almost no such thing as “too popular” if you go by the numbers.
I do mostly see people on this app naming their girls Emerson, but I like it way better for boys.

My good friend just named her son Emerson, she calls him Em for short. He is the only Emerson I know.

It’s definitely a known name but saying that I’ve never met anyone with the name boy or girl at all.
I like it more for a girl.
