Test taken too early?

Question

my husband and I are trying for another baby. we had unprecedented sex multiple times a day, the week of my ovulation. I'm supposed to start my period tommorow. I had some dark brown spotting after sex this morning and figured it was probably implantation bleeding. I took a 5-day early pregnancy test and it came out negative... 
Could the test have been too early or is it most likely that we're not pregnant?

The spotting was probably just old blood or a little irritation from sex, but only time will tell. Treat your body as if it's pregnant until you either get a BFP or your period comes.

Your period is about to show up....
Implantation bleeding is actually quite rare. Only about 27% of all pregnant women have it. 
I noticed that here on Glow it seems like 700% of them seen it! Lol. 
And IB takes place before your period is due. 
If you have spotting around that time is probably af showing up.
