My husband shuts down when he's upset

So I have been married a little over a year and I managed to deal with it when we were dating but it doesn't help anymore.

If my husband is upset, if we have a disagreement or he sees I'm upset (his fault or not) he just shuts down. He won't look at me and he won't say anything other than sorry.

He had a rough early childhood, his mother passed away when he was 2 and he was raised by his grandparents. His dad has a pretty bad temper and his grandfather never really shows feelings. Im sure this has something to do with this, but I just don't know how to help him. I'd like to be able to have a two way conversation even when things get hard.
