When to start time out ?

What age did you start using the "time out chair"

You can start using it at a pretty early age. The research shows in that order for it to be effective, you should stick with the guideline of one minute for each year old (2 minutes for 2 year olds, 5 minutes for 5 year old). Also have a timer set so the child can see it since they can't grasp the sense of time at such a young age. At the end of time out, review why the child was in timeout and each the appropriate replacement behavior. It also helps to do a compliance task to make sure he or she is ready to come out of time out (such as "put your hand on your head"... Something simple but shows that they are ready to listen).

Didn't until 2 years old, we do the three strike method the time out, at one I believe redirection is essential to creating a positive environment

Thanks y'all . My LO is to young for decipline right now .. other then being told no . He'll be one tomorrow ! Which he does understand and has already started "talking back" I'll say no and he'll say yes ! Lol he's so silly , it's cute now .. But it won't be in another year .??

As soon as they understand it. My son started getting time outs when he was 2 - 2 1/2 years old. But it was only for 3 mins and then he'd come off and I'd explain why he was put into time out. That's the key. Discipline, explain (short & simple ie: it's not nice to hit the cat and when you do you go for time out), then reinforce love. I do it with my son and with the kids I daycare, but I have an 18 month old who I don't do time outs with I just explain to her why something was wrong. They understand at that age very well. Consistency is also key in it. Like ie hits the cat every time goes to time out. Not just once in a while and other times you ignore it. You have to be constant. I also count my son now. I read a book called 1-2-3 magic: effective discipline for children 2-12. It was good.
