Should opening someone else’s texts be illegal?

Since opening someone else’s mail is illegal, should it be the same with their text messages?

Like going to jail or getting fined over it? I don't think so, it's more like a daily life issue and where I'm not comfortable with the government getting into lol 
That being said, if you read other people's messages behind their back, you're definitely an asshole

I'd  said no, because It's not a federal offense.  And to protect yourself you have the option of passwords.

I say yes, as all of my doctor's offices now send a text about appointments and/or if you need to come back in for X Y Z. 
To me that is like opening mail or an email. 
Otherwise the answer would be no. Even with a password most phones have a way to bypass the password to see the full text without even having to unlock the phone.

Texts? No. Emails? Maybe. Snail Mail is protected because of the content that can come through mail. Most places have an email option instead now.

I think it would make more sense to make going through someone’s phone without permission illegal. Otherwise someone could avoid the texts but snoop through emails and such

No. There are much more serious things to worry about. The police would be backed up over petty stuff people could solve themselves. 
Also, people typically don’t talk personal information through text. If they do, that’s just stupid. What’s stopping someone from hacking your phone at that point?

They can try to read my text messages but my phone is password protected and I only know the password.

I don’t have an issue AT ALL if my husband opens my texts, as long as he reads them to me (salon owner) and he could care less if I open his. Respect. Trust. Security.

Yes. I get texted a lot of things regarding my medical condition and a lot of things regarding university and work so I don’t want anyone snooping through my phone. But then again I have lock on my phone. If someone manages to hack it open then they should be punished.
