it's not always a choice if per say you were in a wreck and you were given tons and tons of pain medicine by a doctor, not knowing that it could develop into an addiction. it literally changes the chemical makeup of a person's brain. addiction is sad.

People can be biologically predisposed to be more susceptible to addiction, which takes many forms other than drugs. So for some people it is literally in their blood, and it's an upward battle. The choice is always the very first time though. My roommate's family has a history with alcoholism and gambling so she stays away from alcohol so she doesn't risk it, which is mature and proactive. But not everyone necessarily knows if they're genetically predisposed to addiction, so some people might drink or gamble without knowing what they're tempting. So I answered it's a mix of both, because there's always some choice involved, but I think once someone is already addicted is isn't always so black and white. People with addiction need actual professional help, and blaming them and making it out to be 100% their "choice" is just harmful.

I'm a recovering addict I was in a wreck 8 years ago so bad I was sent to a chiropractor and needed surgery and I refused the surgery because it would most likely end up with needing additional surgeries they give me pain medication and I told them they kept giving me stronger and stronger pain medication it seemed like the chiropractor was making things worse eventually the pain medication stop the pain didn't and I need it more I could not sleep I was in so much pain it hurts move I realized I had a problem and it mediately put myself in and out patient program it was not a choice that I made to become addicted it was something that happened to my body with the medication entered I did not choose to become addicted I did not even want the surgery because I was told that I could cause more pain there for more pain medication I feel as if the reason most doctors give pain medication out it's to make money it's not actually to help us

They made a choice to start by then lose control as someone mentioned already. However, when you see repeated stories over and over about how highly addicting they usually are, how life shattering addiction to it is for all around them (including themselves), and all the people in my area who die from it, I will say I know better than to even try it. Every action has a consequence and if you know the risks, it’s a choice you are making.
