“Keep your hands to yourself!”

Ta

I think we are all aware of the “hands to yourself” rule that has been taught to every kid for years on end. It’s certainly still prevalent today. I’ve mainly always took it to be particularly relevant to unwanted or mean touching. I.E hitting, kicking, poking, touching another kid to the point of annoying them, slapping, etc. etc. However, my son just finished first grade and will be entering second grade in the fall. The school sent out a notice that said hugging is included in their “keep your hands to yourself” policy and that we need to inform our kids of this over the summer so they’re aware by fall. It said this has always been a rule, though not heavily enforced, but they will begin doing so.

So, do you think that kids should be prohibited from hugging each other? What about hand-holding? Why or why not? Is this for elementary school only or should it extend to older kids as well?

For the sake of the question, my disclaimer is that all kids should behave politely and we can assume that if another child doesn’t want a hug, that should be respected. This is regarding consented hugging.
