IUD - What’s your horror story? 🙊

Question

Ahhh I’ve got a prescription for the IUD, just waiting for my insertion appointment. I was a little nervous about the pain of them putting it in??? I’m not sure if that makes me a wuss or not 😂 but I’d love some feedback from you lovely ladies. 
How much different was the cramping from that of your period cramps? Could you still go to work the next day? Any side effects? 
Honestly; anything you could tell me about the whole experience would be great! My friends over exaggerate the whole thing when I ask, and it just makes me all the more uncomfortable.

Horror IUD stories aren’t super frequent but I have one I’m happy to share. Please note that the hormonal IUD’s are a localised hormone which shouldn’t leave the uterus, making it ideal for most women. However, for 2% of women, the hormones get into your system and cause side effects like you might have with other BC. 
I got my Mirena I’m on Feb 26th this year. The rest of the day my pain was pretty well managed by strong pain killers because I had surgery the same day. The next two weeks were horrendous with pain. I could hardly walk. I cried a lot or just laid up on the couch with hot water bottles and pain killers. Nothing helped the pain. The pain was so bad they even did X-rays to see if the Mirena had ruptured my uterus. 
After two weeks the pain became sporadic for 2.5 months. I would get pain 5-8 times a day lasting anywhere from 10 minutes to 6 hours. I just had to sit down at work whenever the pain hit, fortunately my lovely coworkers picked up my slack.
Now I get pain every couple of days. It’s not as bad but still really shitty. 
I have gained 8kgs in 3.5 months 😫
I have had some pretty bad pimples which I don’t usually get. 
I had to go on antidepressants after 4-6 weeks because the Mirena gave me pretty severe anxiety and some depression.  I have nearly walked out on my partner a couple of times, for no reason at all. Today was a bad day, but fortunately my partner is a bloody champion and put up with my breakdown and talked me through it. God I love him. 
We were told to give it 6 months for my body to adjust but my partner and I decided today that enough was enough. We cannot keep it in any longer. So I’m going to he docs on Monday to have it removed. 
Good luck with your IUD. I hope it goes well, you recover quickly and you don’t get any negative side effects.

I love mine. Insertion was fast. Felt like bad period cramps did it without pain killers. I have had no bad side effects.

I also have a negative story.. I got mine inserted the process wasn’t overally painful just felt like a lot of pressure and a bit of pain. 
It felt okay for the rest of the day however I could feel it. The next day the pain started it was so bad I literally felt it down my legs, back, stomach. I couldn’t move or barely walk I was in so much pain everything hurt I lasted about 3 days then I went to the emergency room and got it removed I felt so much better!! 
I do however have a history of endo and have scar tissue from a cyst removal surgery I don’t know if this factored into it as my doctor and Gyno couldn’t confirm why it was so excruciating

I don’t know if mine is a horror story, but here ya go. I had a mirena, which another poster explained beautifully, I just wanted to add that since it releases hormones locally, it doesn’t prevent ovulation. It prevents a fertilized embryo from implanting into the uterus. 
I had mine for 2.5 years with absolutely no issues. I loved not having to take the pill everyday. I had no periods with it, no cramping etc. 
And then I got pregnant on it. Honestly not even sure how it happened, but found out at almost 10 weeks that I was pregnant. After the pregnancy I had a new one inserted and maybe after 3 months it became embedded in my uterus, so I had it removed. 
Now I’m avoiding them, but we’re also TTC so I might consider it again in the future.

If you’re going to get one, I think horror stories are the last things you should be asking for lol. You’re going to psych yourself out. Yes there are some horror stories out there, but a lot of people use them with no issue. My sister in law had one and said it didn’t hurt to have put in.

I had the mirena inserted at 12 weeks pp with my first child and it was a horrible experience. It hurt terribly just to get it placed(which the doc said should not have happened). When I was ok’d to return to having sex it was not only painful and uncomfortable for me but my SO said he felt like he was being poked with a pin! I mentioned this to my doc and they said “it will soften up a little more as time goes by.” Then a few weeks later while on my period (for the 2nd time since the IUD was placed) I went to change my tampon and POP....out comes my IUD along with it! Ugh....needless to say I did not get it replaced AGAIN....I did tell my doc about it and she said “Wow, that should not have happened!”.....YA THINK?!

I had mirena put in after my first child at 12 weeks PP. During insertion it was painful and they said it wasn't supposed to be, then when the doc went to trim the strings, she accidentally pulled it out! Hurt really bad but them I had to sit there in pain for 30 mins while they went and got another to insert. I had bleeding, not spotting but full bleeding for 2 weeks after insertion. I had awful cramps ALL THE TIME. I got my first period a month later and it was awful, and before the IUD I already had awful periods. I bleed and spotted off and on for 8 months. At six months I begged it to be removed because of this and my husband and I couldn't have sex without pain and bleeding. They only checked to see if it was in place and said all my symptoms would go away after it's been for a yr. Fuck that. I had it removed at 8 months and cried it was so painful and they wouldn't give me anesthetic even local. I bled for a month after removal. Also had constant cystic acne which I never had before, gained 15lbs, and was hot and sweaty all the time.

I don’t necessarily think it’s a “horror story.” My cervix wouldn’t relax the first time they tried to insert my Paragard and it went into the wall of my uterus,  so the second time  I had to have a block for my cervix and was put under so as to ensure it was inserted properly. I’ve had on and off cramping and light bleeding since I got it, but nothing bad. I’ve had it for about a month now and just had my first period. They were not lying when they said the cramps were severe. I have a higher pain tolerance and I ended up crying because of the pain. The cramps only lasted about four hours and then everything has been fine. I have been bleeding heavier and longer but I’m happy that I don’t have to worry about pregnancy. Good luck!
