Having Trouble Connecting or Feeling Maternal After IVF
I’m almost 5 months pregnant and have had trouble feeling maternal or feeling connected to my baby. We eventually conceived through IVF after actively trying on our own. We had three failed IUI’s and finally had success with IVF. It was 2+ years of trying and watching as friend after friend was getting pregnant. I even had a hard time when my best friend became pregnant her first month trying. It seemed so easy for her and according to the doctors there was nothing wrong with us! But month after month i got my period.
Almost 10 years ago I became pregnant and felt instantly maternal and connected with my baby but s/he didn’t make it past 7 weeks.
Now I’m 31 yo and I feel almost nothing when the doctor plays the heartbeat. I am relieved to know he’s alive of course. Feeling kicks this week has helped a little bit. My friends think I just became a little numb to it after struggling and subsequently feeling upset each month. I have my 20 week scan this week and I’m hoping seeing him will help me connect.
Has anyone else struggled to connect with their baby or feel maternal? I’m worried I might not connect with him when he’s born which will translate into being a bad mom. So many moms say they’re “so in love” with their baby while pregnant but I’m just not there, yet.
