Should I get my boyfriend's mom a birthday gift?

My boyfriend and I  are 19 and have been together around 4 years but 3 of them were long distance so I really only started to get to know his family this year! His mom's birthday was a few days ago and I kind of want to get her a little something, but my boyfriend said not to. She's always very sweet and gets me gifts for holidays so I just wanted to get something small at least. Should I? Any suggestions would be appreciated by the way :)

Get her a lotion set from bath and body works that’s not hard and it will look cute when she takes it out of the bag hah

Why wait until her birthday is over lol yes four years is long enough to be buyin her gifts. 
For holidays I usually get my MIL a rose bush, a trip to get her nails done, or a wind chime
