Going against what's expected...

Maddie
Okay so my fiancé and I have decided to semi-elope. We are going to have a small ceremony with just our parents and siblings. Then, we're going to have parties for our extended family and friends to celebrate with us, one with his family and one with mine. Our families are in different states so we are trying to eliminate the travel for everyone. This is also going to save us thousands of dollars in the long run which is what I want. I didn't like the idea of spending so much money on one day, especially when we're paying off student loans and saving for a house. Anyway, since we thought of this, I'm finally excited about my wedding. I don't feel overwhelmed or stressed like I was when I was planning the wedding people expected from me.
My family is totally fine with our decision but we have to tell his parents and I am terrified of how is mom might react. Does anyone have any advice or personal experiences to share to help the situation? I'd appreciate it!
