IC Complication With Pregnancy #2 (Update)

Mimi

Hello ladies! Like the majority of you, when I was pregnant with my first child my husband and I found out at our anatomy scan (20wk 4days) that my cervix measured 0.8cm in length and that I was 1cm dilated. We were of course devastated but we received a rescue cerclage and I was placed on bed rest until 36 weeks. The cerclage was removed at 36 wk and our baby boy was born at 40wk as healthy as can be. When we became pregnant with baby #2 we already planned on getting a cerclage early to avoid bed rest. At our first appointment (8 weeks) my cervix was measuring 3.4cm which was great but we knew that would change quickly so we scheduled our cerclage for 14 weeks. So when the day of surgery came I asked my OB if it was still long and she told me that my cervix was already 1cm long and I already started dilating a little 😞. My husband and I were so grateful we got it done when we did! With the cerclage I was still able to work and do most things that did not require too much heavy lifting. So let’s fast forward to baby #2 anatomy scan (20wk 6days). Baby was looking very healthy and active but when it came time to look at the cervix, the sonograper was having issues. She had to switch from from the abdominal to the transvaginal ultrasound to clearly see the cervix and when I looked at the screen my heart dropped. The inner os of my cervix started funneling all the way down to my cerclage. I couldn’t help but cry 😔. My OB placed me on bedrest for 2 weeks and wants to reevaluate to see what the next steps will be. Today is day 8/14 and I’m just hoping and praying that the funneling hasn’t gotten any worse.

UPDATE #1

My follow-up appointment was this Tuesday ladies. During the ultrasound, it appeared as if the funneling went past my stitch and the sonographer said that it looked like my membranes were bulging😭. I also had more amniotic fluid than usual which was causing EVEN MORE pressure on my cervix. So my OB did a physical exam on me to make sure my external os was not dilating and glory be to God it was closed 🙏🏾😭. I was admitted immediately to high risk MFM after the appointment because they feared that I would go into pre-term labor. At that point my head was spinning because I just couldn’t believe that this was happening! I was only 22wk 5 d and I could not bear the thought of losing my sweet baby boy 😞.

UPDATE #2

The day after I was admitted the hospital sonographer did another anatomy scan on my son to make sure that everything was functioning the way it’s supposed to. Fortunately all was well with him and we even saw that my amniotic fluid decreased as well! After the anatomy scan she looked at my cervix and Lo and behold, my cerclage was doing it’s job! The funneling looked like a tiny sliver and my cervix was measuring 1.8cm 🙏🏾!!! My external os was still closed and when the sonographer applied some pressure to my abdomen nothing budged!!! 😭😭😭 Words could not describe how happy I was! I was discharged on that same day and now I am able to be in the comfort of my own home. I thank God for keeping my son safe in my womb 🙌🏾😭.
