Teaching about fertility

Jasmin

Does anyone else wonder why they never knew this much about their own body and cycle until they started actively TTC? Like, why don't we make it more of a priority to teach girls about these things?

I knew around puberty that I had a period and that ovulation was when an egg was released and a fertilized egg could result in becoming pregnant. Other than learning slightly more technical information in my basic health class in high school, I didn't really get much more education. I knew nothing about basal body temp, luteinizing hormone, or even a "fertile window."

Now I'm not saying we need to teach 12 year olds about all this (though I don't know that it would be a bad thing), but I feel like I should have known more about what was going on with my body before now (I'm 28!).

Maybe I should have taken responsibility of my own knowledge and done more research before now...so maybe it's on me. But, honestly, if I couldn't be bothered to do my own research until I was actively TTC at 28 years old, why would any teenager make it a priority?

Personally, I think teaching about these things would help girls be more aware of their bodies and more in control of their fertility when they decide to have sex and would even help boys understand the whole process!

I plan to teach my future children.
