Glucose test. What is it?

This is my first pregnancy and I'm 16 weeks along. My doctor hasn't even mention this test to me yet, however I hear about it a lot from pregnant woman further along. I know the point of the test but here is what I don't know...first off, what exactly goes down at this test? I hear the first test take a whole hour, and if you fail that, the next test is 3 hours long. Why so long for both?! Do you have to drink that syrup stuff for both? Also, is this test optional?

Every test offered is optional. I opted out of the gd test this pregnancy, there is contradiction in the test with new research done.

I took the test almost two weeks ago. It's really not bad. You drink a drink,  wait an hour to see if your body breaks down the sugars and then they draw your blood. 
I hate needles and I had my blood drawn so many times in the first trimester. But this I feel is an important test to get. I would feel awful knowing I skipped out on a test that could have prevented an overly large baby or something.

The glucose test is to check and make sure that your body is responding and processing your sugars accordingly. Most pregnant woman fail the 1hr, plus I honestly don't feel like the 1hr is even really accurate anyway, because of what I have seen and heard as a lab tech doing this test. During the three hour your blood is drawn at the beginning and various intervals over the 3hr period. Depending on your levels at the end they will decide whether or not to diagnose you as a gestational diabetic. Most doctors will usually do another blood draw a different day instead of using the 1hr as diagnostic because almost everyone fails it anyway. The test is not required, I have known several woman to refuse a retake if they throw up during the test or just don't want to do it. Hope this helps

You can refuse. No doctor can actually force you to take or do anything you don't want to do. Ive refused before. 3 children. They just send you for diabetes counseling and monitor your diet. They'll tell you to prick your finger, I totally don't. Been there, done that.

I had a 2 hour test they told me not to eat anything 8 hours before. I went in they took a vial if blood. Then gave me the drink to take I had 15,mind to drink it. It wasn't too bad to me the orange taste like melted popsicles. I went back to the waiting room waited an hour then they took another vial of blood waited another hour then another vial of blood. I don't know if you can refuse honestly not sure why you would want to. You get results back in a few days they also test your iron level with the blood they take. I passed my test but found out my iron was low so I got put in iron pills.

The test probably takes so long because they measure how much glucose is in your urine or blood after a set amount of time.
Personally I will take the test, but only if they can do it without the syrup. There is crazy high fructose corn syrup, and some Bizzare chemicals in the syrup. Sometimes they will do a more reasonable test where you can just eat a set amount of candy, which at least doesn't have unnecessary ingredients.

Yes, you drink a glucose drink at both. The point of it is to see how your body processes the glucose, so after you drink it, they wait for an hour and then draw your blood to measure the glucose levels. The 1-hr test is not that precise. Sometimes it indicates that your glucose levels are too high. This may or may not mean that you have gestational diabetes. In that case the 3-hr test is conducted to confirm. I have heard of women refusing the test, especially the 3-hr. Some prefer to just be treated as if they have gestational diabetes. The 1-hr test is not so bad, so I don't see why you would refuse it really. If you do have gestational diabetes you should want to know since it will impact your pregnancy and baby.

I'm not sure why the test is so long. But it's to check for pregnancy diabetes. You have to drink this orange stuff & it's really sweet. & no you have to do the test you don't get to pick if you do or if you don't it's required during pregnancy.

I got to take the 1 hour once and the 3 hour twice because I'm at a higher risk for GD. I didn't really think it was too bad. My biggest complaint was boredom and their uncomfy chairs.

I just know if I had GD and didn't treat for it, I'd never forgive myself.

It's one of the first of many sacrifices we'll make for our little ones. And this one is easy to make.

Every test and procedure is optional but doesn't mean you should opt out. It's done for a good reason. Everyone wants a healthy baby.
