Most doctors use dissolvable stitches so they’ll eventually dissolve on their own. I’ve never heard of anyone having to go back and get them out 
As for timeframe they start breaking down around 10-14 days after being stitched but can take many more weeks depending on location

My stitches took over 6 weeks to completely dissolve. Pretty uncomfortable but my doctor said it’s normal.
