I haven't bought meat from the deli counter. I used to work in one and I just avoid it now. 😷 But I do eat packaged lunch meat, bologna, sliced ham, turkey, whatever. I just try to watch it and throw it out if it's been sitting in my fridge a while.

i’ve heard to only eat it within the first week of purchasing it. i stay away from deli meats, unless i’m craving subway but i get mine toasted and it’s very seldom that i crave subway 😂🤷🏻‍♀️

The hospital gave me a cold turkey sandwich and I asked them are they sure because I’m pregnant and they said it’s perfectly fine to eat cold deli meats. The only thing they said about the deli is to trust that they are clean delis, not ones from like little gas stations with a deli or anything like that.

My midwife told me if it’s the freshly sliced kind you buy from the actual deli, you need to heat it, but if it’s the prepackaged kind you get at the grocery store, it’s fine to eat cold. I’ve heard other pregnant women’s doctors say go ahead and eat it. I cheated a couple times 🙈 I was craving roast beef like crazy! the reason you’re not supposed to eat that or things like rare steak, sushi, etc, isn’t that it’s going to cause immediate harm your baby. It’s that if it has listeria or another foodborne bacteria, it’s THAT much more dangerous for you because you are two bodies. My mom went through two rounds of chemo while i was pregnant and we had basically the same food rules, because her immune system was compromised so it would be much worse for her to get listeria than someone with a healthy immune system. So it’s not like eating a piece of turkey will eat away at your baby’s brain or something, it’s just a precaution in case of bacteria. I’ve had medium rare steaks prepared by my fiancé (he’s a chef) and I’ve snuck a few bites of sushi from the sushi restaurant I’ve been going to for 10 years. I trust their food. Not enough to eat tons of it all the time, but a bite won’t kill me!
