We're in a debate if they have to understand what they're saying for it to count

I was just talking about this with my husband. We agreed its not until they actually choose to say something they've heard. Or repeat after someone

We’re going with understanding. He babbles and sometimes will say what sounds like mama or dada but you can tell he has no idea what he’s saying. I try to reinforce that I’m momma by pointing to me but as soon as I do that he loses interest in talking 😂

I mean, I think it’s a little of both. Obviously, he was babbling at like 3 months, but those weren’t words he was deliberately saying because he had heard them before. He said Dada first and he said it because he had heard it so much. He may not have known at the time that daddy was Dada, but he said it, so it counts. He understands now who Dada is. He also knows “uh oh” and “ah ah ah” (as in, no don’t do that). He has said mama and nana but I haven’t quite counted those in yet.

I was so excited for an actual baby word to come out of my sons mouth, besides nonsense. And it was Ba-ba one day, and then Da-da the following day. I’m counting ba-ba as his first word for now. Bc he hasn’t said anything that means anything yet!

We're going with understanding. She said "ma" like weeks after being born but I'm not going to be like "she said mom!" Because obviously it's just sounds. She's certainly vocalizing with more intent now than before but it's still just a string of sounds and not a word.
