Do you think that people can "get over" pet allergies?

Question

My husband didn't want us to adopt a cat, he said he was allergic, so I was really scared to get one. But we adopted the kitten, and he now is her main cuddler, and loves her so much. Do you think people can get over allergies, if they love the pet enough?

I don't think so but peoples bodies change and I know people can develop new allergies as they grow older. And for me, I'm extremely allergic to one of my aunt's cats (who always wants to cuddle 😞) and I'm fine with my brother's cats... it's weird.

Um no. But allergy medicine helps. And perhaps your husband thought he was more allergic than he actually is?

No. But there are certain breeds of cats that are less allergy causing than others. I wonder if you got lucky and got one of them!

So, a few things:
No, you don’t get over an allergy like that. You CAN acclimate to a specific animal’s dander (the main allergen), so that the animal no longer irritates your allergies, or at least doesn’t set them off as badly. 
Also, many people who are allergic to cats are also perfectly fine around kittens. As the kitten ages, their dander increases, thus creating a reaction. 
I cannot even touch a cat without wheezing and getting puffy eyes, but I’ve lived with cats and been okay after acclimating, and I love to snuggle little kittens.

Lots of people that are allergic to cats or dogs aren't actually allergic to the species, but to the specific dander of that animal or a few animals. My best friend from high school had tons of cats and never had a problem, but she's allergic to my cat. My aunt has been allergic to cats her whole life, but currently has two cats that she isn't allergic to at all. Its actually not uncommon. 
But, yes people can get over an allergy is their allergy is not a severe one. When you're mildly alelrgic you can build up a tolerance by having repeated exposure and over time your allergy goes away. Ive personally done this with almonds which I was mildly allergic too just because they're in a lot of food and people aren't always upfront about what they cook with. I can now eat almonds without having a reaction at all. It would work the same with pets. But, if he was severely allergic to cats then no it wouldn't be possible for the allergy to clear up (in theory it could happen, but you'd end up hospitalised repeatedly for repeated severe allergic reactions or even dead so people generally wouldn't try it).

I used to be deadly allergic to cats and now I just get stuffy noses. I love cats and probably will always have one. This is my baby Felix/ bubba. I am however deathly allergic to rabbits now.
