What's the difference between a chemical pregnancy and an early miscarriage?

A chemical pregnancy is a very early miscarriage when nothing has been detected on a scan, ie no gestational sac or embryo. A miscarriage is when you've seen something on scan or heard heartbeat and then it fails to continue developing.

If the loss happens before 5 weeks it's considered a chemical. From 5-20 weeks it's a miscarriage and after 20 it's considered a stillborn or stillbirth.
