Mom hates my sons name?

Question

We’ve decided to name our son Jayceon. & my mom says she hates it & is coming up with all sorts of things to try to make me chose something else. I’m white & my husband is black/Puerto Rican. She said she’s going to call him Jesse? Is it harsh to tell her she’s not gonna see him if she’s going to call him that. It’s just going to confuse him because that has nothing to do with his name AT ALL to even be a nickname. I attached screen shots of our texts & I just need opinions. (It’s been going on for a while these are just texts from today)

I don't think it's too much to tell her she won't see your child if she can't call him by his name. It's honestly baffling to me that anyone thinks they are important enough that they have the right to call someone else's child by another name because they don't like it. Fortunately, people like my sons' names and I haven't had a problem. It's extremely disrespectful to you, your baby's father, and your baby to refuse to call him by his name.

I’m kinda confused on how you pronounce his name, maybe that’s why your mom is wanting to call him jesse?? Even then jesse and jc sound very similar so I wouldn’t think it would be that confusing. Normally I’m one to take the mothers side over their relatives but this whole thing seems a little silly. If your okay with him being called a nick name then why does it matter what he’s called? Parents don’t necessarily get the final say in their kids name names. Kids can have MANY nick names given to them by friends and family. To throw a fit over two nick names that sound very similar cause you didn’t pick one of them is kinda childish imo.

PR father with a black rapper made up name.... that comment was tacky and I never knew that names had races lol. however... I had an issue with my SO mother and side of the family calling my daughter by her middle name instead of her first and it was so frustrating. jayceon is a cute name and wont have any issues in school at all considering it's not an uncommon name. assert yourself and let her know it's what you are naming him and if she doesn't like it that's her problem, but that's his name not "Jesse" and she will not call him that

This is exactly why we don’t share our baby names until baby is born and it’s official. People’s stupid comments just make you feel shitty or second guess your opinion. I think all you need to reiterate to your mom is that her opinion on your child’s name is not relevant, and you don’t want to discuss it further. If she can’t be respectful about it then maybe just take a break from her for a while.

personally, I think shes rude. Ypu can name your baby whatever you want. From personal experience my great grandma called me Kimberly until about a month before she died and then still didn't even call me by my name she called me kenda my name is Kendra. I'm not sure if she didn't like my name or just couldn't remember it but It never confused me. My daughter that I'm pregnant with is actually being names after her because I love her name Viola and baby girl's middle name is Laura Lee my mom is going to call her Vi and my dad said he wants to call her Laura. I don't have a preference, I personally don't care but with yoyr situation the first part of the screenshots I read I felt was kinda really rude.

Exactly why I’m not telling anyone the name we pick out before the baby is born! My mom tends to have super strong opinions and this kind of conversation would really stress me out lol. I don’t think it’s out of line to tell her she needs to call him by his name if she’s going to be around him, especially when she’s wanting to call him something COMPLETELY different. Stand your ground! I think Jayceon a great name!!
