how difficult is it just starting out? I've never done it before but I really want to. any tips?

It is really easy. Only tip- get a few needles and some thread and watch some youtube videos.

Look up the crochet crowd. A guy named Mikey does the videos and is great. He has both a web site and a YouTube channel. I learned from him watching his beginner videos. And then I’d choose a pattern with a video and just keep rewatching till I got it.

I started using only YouTube tutorials and I didn't find it all too difficult. I think the most important thing is to find a project you REALLY want to put time and effort into. Not just some basic "beginner" project. This first thing I ever made was a mermaid tail blanket from a YouTube tutorial. It took me a little over 2 weeks working on it for at least an hour everyday. Now that I'm more experienced I can see the beginner flaws but I put a lot into this blanket and all-in-all it turned out really well.

I thought myself how to crochet in like 45 minuets from watching YouTube videos. You just have to find the right video. I never learned anything complex just the basics.
