Shelter (pound) cat or Humane society cat?

Ce

Quick conundrum.

Basically we're looking to adopt a kitten under 2 years old to keep our current 2 year old queen occupied and have someone to play with. I've visited the local humane society, which must have close to 30 kittens in the main room to play with. I felt drawn to a vocal but extremely sad looking tabby kitten there. Note: These animals are pulled from other nearby shelters around the huge city we're in and are no-kill.

I also felt morally obligated to visit the shelters closest to my house. Where it was loud with barking dogs and although they had 3 kittens, it was difficult to read the personalities because of the traffic with the dogs scaring them. One kitten did not appear to be social (possibly sick). One looked like her spirit was broken and was hair and bone. If you picked her up she would go limp in your hands. The last was a calico who, again, was scared but friendly. I feel horrible saying this, but I didn't feel drawn to any of the shelter cats. I sat with them for an hour to pet them and gave a donation. But I'm well aware that this shelter isn't no-kill.

So I'm caught between wanting the yellow one at the humane society who's in better hands, and potential perpetual guilt that I didn't save someone who would be killed at the shelter in who knows how long.

FYI I'm aware I probably sound absurd to some of you ladies for being so soft, but I've never bought a cat in my life. They have all been strays brought in before this. However, strays are very hard to find in this city so I've given up on hoping to cross one after a year of looking and no one has any kittens that I know need homes.
