Can I leave an expired Implanon in?

Question

Hey all. I had my daughter in 07, and immediately received an Implanon implant as birth control. I removed and re-inserted a new one in '10-'11.. and have not removed it. It was a 3 year inplant, so it has been expired for over a year. 
Has anybody left their implant in? Or know the side effects of leaving one in?

I had mine after my son in 2008, and I forgot I even had it in until June 19th 2015. It started getting a red around where it was inserted and really hot to the touch. And had pus coming out from whers it was inserted so I went in and theu had to cut it out not a very big scar, but boy did jt hurt when they poked the numbing medicine right on the infection.   Rhey had to cut it this way because of the indection and leav it open bit inw glad I got it out and now my boyfriend and I can try tk concieve :) I guess it would be best tk get it out. But 7 yrs later is a long time for me to keep it in...opps here's. Pic of what it looked like after I got it out

I was supposed to get mine out in February but didnt. They told me it would build more scar tissue around it but not to be too concerned. I really need to get another one because the pill is ridiculous lol but I can't find a place in my network who handles these.

I know this is a little late for your post but I kept mine in 3 years past the expiration assuming it would lose potency. My husband and I decided to try and start a family. I went to planned parenthood to get it removed and they ended up not charging me anything because it was "preventative". They said even If I didn't have insurance I would not need to pay the whole thing right away. The doctor said that the birth control implant could very well still be releasing hormones and preventing pregnancy even after almost 6 years.

I got mine out early and it had a hole in it. But when I got it my dr stressed to be a hundred times to not leave it in too long. Something about future fertility. I've never checked in on it tho
