how early can you test for pregnancy before upcoming cycle?

Hi guys ! just a brief background. My husband and I have been trying for almost a year now and usually I'm not so anxious to test so I need some advice .  Today I tested 6 days before my cycle and its negative 8dpo  am I out of luck?!
